Intermediate ride (Ride Guide Liz)
Join Ride guide Liz for a Mt Thompson Adventure ride from Manakau. Meeting/parking on South Manakau Rd just off State Highway One - there is parking outside the Manakau Cemetery. Meet by 915am, ready to ride by 930am. (Its about 1hr 15min drive from Karori) Expect to be out for 4-6 hours - dependent on group! You will need enough water for a big climb - lots if it's hot, and lunch/snacks, as well as spare tube/basic tools in case of a flat tyre. (And a bike in good working order!)
The weather can be unpredictable up the top..waterproof/windproof jacket required.This is a strong intermediate ride... there is around 800m of climbing, (up Mt Thompson!), and it's a 26km loop. The descent is Grade 3ish... with some Grade 4 sections. It's not overly steep, but there is plenty of loose rock and rubble to keep things exciting on a natural trail. I will be wearing my knee pads... probably my elbows as well! There is 3km on the state highway... and some of the ride on quiet back country roads before we hit the fire road climbs.
